Young actor cast in MTV soapie Shuga

Tshiamo Molobi is only 12 years old, but already he is set to gain a worldwide audience for his talents.
The actor and television presenter is due to feature among a stellar cast in MTV Base’s edutainment soapie MTV Shuga – the show that gave Oscar-winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o her first major role. The programme deals with HIV prevention, sexual health, family planning and LGBT education, in a way that is appropriate for the MTV Base audience, according to producers.
MTV Shuga has a global reach of 172 broadcasters and platforms and a potential audience of 720 million.
This is just the beginning for Tshiamo, says his agent Joyce Constable.
“This role is yet another acknowledgement that Tshiamo is a rising star. He is definitely one to watch in the South African entertainment industry,” said Constable, director of talent agency Character Connection.
“It’s because of talented young people like Tshiamo that Character Connection is really passionate about finding and nurturing more youths to pursue their dreams in this industry. We are so proud of Tshiamo and his Character Connection peers, who have already been recognised by the industry for their talents.”
Tshiamo’s role in MTV Shuga follows a string of recent high-profile gigs, including presenting kids’ show Bonisanani on SABC 1. He has also featured in the South African cinema blockbuster of 2016, Happiness is a Four-Letter Word, alongside some of the country’s leading actors.
In MTV Shuga, the young star will share the screen with Thuso Mbedu, known for her portrayal of Kitso Medupe on South African soapie Scandal.
Tshiamo and Kitso play the role of two siblings, Lemo and Ipeleng, who are coming to terms with the death of their mother.
Other cast members include South African rapper Kwesta, former Generations actress Winnie Ntshaba and Tanzanian media personality and singer Vanessa Mdee.
MTV Shuga: Down South premieres on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on Wednesday 8 March at 21:30 CAT.
